Pomp and Circumstance

The end of the year brought with it many festivities, culminating with kindergarten graduation today.

Our family gathered to watch Clare graduate.

I remember at the beginning of the year being nervous about so many things with kindergarten.  It was a whole new world for Clare and for our family.  It didn't take long for those nerves to be put to rest.  Clare has had a great year.  She has learned and grown so much!  She knows the lay of the land and tromps around the school like she owns the place.

Here she is with two of her classmates.  She has made some good friends this year.

Everyone in Clare's class signed each other's caps.  What a cute idea!

I think Clare liked it too, because she wore that thing around all day!

Earlier this week Clare received awards for perfect attendance and being a "happy helper."

Jane and Sydney already think they are ready for kindergarten.
Soon enough, my dears, soon enough.

If this year is any indication of how fast the school years go, it won't be long before we are hearing "Pomp and Circumstance" in 2024!   If I think about that for too long, my heart grows heavy.  So for now, I will just make sure Clare knows exactly how proud we are of her....and get ready for SUMMERTIME!

Something About Everyone

Clare is two days away from being a first grader.
An entire post will be devoted to her end of year festivities.  She is ready for summer, and so am I.
I am ready to have my girl home!

Sydney spends more than half of her life upside down.  She is constantly cartwheeling, handstanding, hanging, stretching, back bending, what have you.  Anything and everything....except sitting still.

This is Jane's recent depiction of our family. (I think there is one extra!)

She is writing and coloring so well!  It doesn't hurt that everyday after school she is willing to be Clare's student.  Clare has her doing a condensed version of the kindergarten day!  Needless to say, Sydney is rarely willing to be told what to do by her older sister.  So, Jane gets to be the lone pupil.

Last but not least, Graham ate his first popsicle!  Messy doesn't even begin to describe him afterwards, but he didn't seem to mind!  Nothing a dip in the pool won't solve!

Our Camping Attempt

We have been talking with the girls about going camping for several months.  It seemed that something always came up....soccer, birthday parties, etc.  We finally decided to just camp out in our backyard.  Casey swore to me that it was going to be too hot, but I pushed, and we went for it.

On Friday afternoon, we set up the tent.

The girls had a great time playing in it.

We grilled hot dogs,

built a fire,

and made s'mores.

We played and played and played....until well after dark. Then we declared it time to get ready for bed. We got all of our sleeping bags, blankets, and pillows and set up in our tent.  We get in position to go to sleep, and noticed it was warm, very warm.  The air was hot and still.

After about two minutes, we were all sweating.  After about five minutes, Clare, glistening with sweat,  said, "Can we call this thing off?"  We were all so hot.  We threw in the towel and decided to come in.  Casey hasn't said, "I told you so" yet....but I know he's thinking it.

Maybe we'll try again in the fall???

Summer's Comin'

Jane and Sydney have one more day of school.  After tomorrow, summer begins for those two!

They have had fun the last couple of days with the end of year program and Fun in the Sun Day.

Jane and Sydney dressed as Cookie Monsters for the program.

They sang "C is for Cookie," "My God is So Big," and a Spanish song "Quien Soy Yo?"

They did great, and it was fun to watch them perform!

Next up was Fun in the Sun Day!  Jane and Syd were bouncing off of the walls the morning of this fun day!  They got to wear their swim suits and play outside in the water all day.  Can you tell they were excited?

They had a great day, and they, especially Jane, came home EXHAUSTED.

Jane and Sydney have had a great year in preschool.  They they have both learned so much.  Sydney loves being with people, so she was always thrilled to go to school.  She loved her time at school, made lots of friends and loved her teachers.

Jane, too, loved school.  She clings closer to me, so I was actually surprised at how happy she always was to go.  Pleasantly surprised!  She has done so well, and she learned so much.  I am amazed at how well she is writing and drawing.

I am thankful for a great preschool with great teachers.  And I am so proud of these two girls!

What I've Learned in Kindergarten...

Clare's kindergarten year is coming to an end.  16 days left according to her.  This year I have learned:
  • It will be just as hard to get my kindergartener out the door in the morning on day 125 as it was on day 25.
  • My heart will fill with pride when Clare gets out of the car, and I overhear many teachers and friends greet her by name.  She is making a name for herself.
  • The kindergarten year is a remarkable one in terms of learning, both in school and at home.  Among other things, Clare has learned to read, add and subtract, measure things, tie her shoes, and put her hair in a ponytail.
  • There are also things you will wish your child hadn't learned..."I'm Sexy and I Know it," and the f-word, to name a couple.
  •  Our family will get only what Clare has "left over" after a long day at school.  Sometimes, the behavior at home is atrocious.  I have learned to be thankful for excellent behavior at school.
  • While I acknowledge that Clare has grown a ton in the past year, she is still not quite as big as she thinks she is!
  • I am thrilled when Clare wants to buy her lunch!   One fewer lunch for me to pack!
  • A good teacher can make a child love school.  Clare has been blessed with a great teacher, and without a doubt, it has shaped her positive view of school.
And finally, I have learned that I am looking forward to summer so I can spend time with my girl who has learned so much herself!
